Department of Commerce offers up to $1 million annually to aid tech entrepreneurs

MADISON — The state Department of Commerce is asking for proposals to create an entrepreneurial and technology transfer center that would help entrepreneurs develop and sell technology products.

Non-profit and for-profit companies are welcome to propose plans for the center, which Gov. Jim Doyle authorized this April. The department will give the center up to $1 million annually, officials said.

“Gov. Jim Doyle is committed to creating a strong and vibrant entrepreneurial climate in Wisconsin,” Commerce Secretary Cory L. Nettles said in a statement. “The new entrepreneurial and technology transfer center will help us nurture the promising new businesses that will create good jobs and investment in communities all across Wisconsin.”

Proposals are due Oct. 15. Once a plan is settled on, the center will work with the commerce department's Bureau of Entrepreneurship. Commerce is looking for a proposal that will boost businesses that promise the greatest economic benefit to the state.

The center must at least four offices spread around the state and serve both urban and rural areas, officials said.
