Firefox - A faster, better web browser

Mozilla Firefox is the Web browser you have been waiting for as an alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. If you are fed up with security warnings, virus threats and endless security patches from Microsoft, then switch to Firefox – now. Its loads pages faster, has a clean look, and offers better relief from pop-up ads and a search tool built right into the browser, among other features.

IE, while patched somewhat by Microsoft’s Service Pack 2 update, has not seen much improvement in more than three years. Switching from IE is easy, as Firefox has a wizard that imports your favorites, browser options, passwords, and a variety of other data.

One of my favorite features in Firefox is tabbed browsing, which allows you to open multiple Web sites in one window and switch between them using tabs. When you browse multiple sites, this helps you organize them.

Firefox also lets you collect and read news headlines and updates from your favorite Web sites right in the browser, using RSS (see my last column).

The browser’s functionality can be enhanced with a wide selection of extensions made by the community, including a tool to back up your bookmarks and a Google search toolbar. For those who like individuality, Firefox is customizable with many choices for themes, buttons, and features. Firefox makes downloading easy by automatically saving files to your desktop.

One of the downsides is that some sites support only IE. Even some that work with Firefox block access to any non-IE browser anyway. A Firefox extension called User Agent Switcher can make the browser impersonate IE so you can try to use these sites.

This full-featured browser is available free for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users at Mozilla.org.

I've been using Firefox for a few months now and I love it: No popups, no spyware can get in. The only thing I've found is that Firefox doesn't like to work with some older Javascript. Another neat feature is the menu in the search toolbar. Besides Google it includes Amazon.com, Dictionary.com, Yahoo and EBay, and you can add others. Go for it!

IE SUCKS

Leaps and bounds above IE! As an IT administrator, I am currently developing a strategy to roll this out to every desktop in my company, and I will recommend that all of my employees use this on their home PCs as well....

I like Firefox, but they have their work cut out for them if they plan on having it work with applications that integrate with IE.

Also..RSS feature overpowers technology of IE, something to point out :)

Hey Mike, I guess this means the gauntlet has been thrown down? I'll be putting together an article for you showing you why IE is still king. I'll get it over to you as soon as I can. In the meantime, as long as you're recommending sub-par technology, you might as well tell everyone to use Linux, OpenOffice, and all the other open sores software out there :-)

Hii Mike ! Way to go. Forefox is THE best browser available today. Although its older versions had some fantastic exensions like "pie menu" which are not compatible with the latest version, its still the most powerful browser. And dear Brian Tinkler if you still love IE, perhaps you are living in the stone age. Mike,Keep on spreading the fire.... :-)

Iv been using firefox since 0.7(ish) and id never go back to using IE all the time. I only use it for ones that dont work in firefox, but thats only because they were designed for IE thats not WC3 compliant.

I tried FireFox recently because a friend asked me to. I downloaded it, but didn't try it until a week later. I was told it was better than IE.

After being begged to try it, I started up my computer and used it to check out my normal sites. Some didn't work, but FireFox seemed pretty good. Then, it asked about an update, so I chose to have it installed. Then I shut off the computer.

When I came back on the next day, my computer couldn't get into the Windows XP login screen and I got the BSoD. I had to reinstall all Windows XP, erasing all of my files. And this just from trying FireFox once!!!

Safer than IE? I think not!
