Madison grid computing efforts attack big research questions
Madison, Wis. — One computer just isn't enough. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, among other organizations, are increasingly turning to big groups of tightly networked computers that share tasks such as analyzing the human genome.
UW-Madison professors Wesley Smith and David Schwartz are working with the Grid Laboratory of Wisconsin to make their data-crunching tasks manageable. The system used is Condor, software developed in-house to grab idle processing power and put it to use toward a single large problem.
