Biodiesel plant being built in DeForest to make alternative fuel

Anamax Corporation broke ground Monday on a new biodiesel plant in DeForest, the largest of its kind in the state at 12,300 square feet and an expected output of 20 million gallons of biodiesel annually.

Biodiesel is a biodegradable, non-toxic fuel made from vegetable oil or animal byproducts that can be used to fuel diesel engines either in its pure state or blended with petroleum-based diesel fuel.

Executives at Anamax could not be reached for comment, but previously told The Capital Times that the plant should be operational in 2006. The plant will use a variety of sources, mainly soybeans but also recycled oils from food preparation. It will be the 10th biodiesel plant in the country and the first to produce biodiesel from multiple sources.

“It was, from what I hear in the community, fairly well received,” said Village President Jeff Miller. He said the plant would be environmentally friendly and bring multiple benefits to the local economy, including 10-15 new jobs, an increase in the tax base, and increased water usage of 9,000 gallons per day, bringing in more revenue for the local utilities and helping to keep rates stable.

Miller said communities should be on the lookout and study the differences between different types of development projects.

“From my understanding, more and more of these opportunities are going to come forward in the next several years and I think, just keep an open mind.”

Wisconsin Secretary of Agriculture Rod Nilsestuen was on hand for the groundbreaking, and later told WTN of the importance of developing renewable energy sources for the state’s economy.

“The governor has been very focused on developing renewables and alternative energy supplies for the last three years,” Nilsestuen said, “and the need for that has become very apparent this fall, given what’s happened with fuel prices.”

Nilsistuen said the state government has taken new steps in promoting renewable energy and leveraging the state’s agricultural resources, boosting ethanol production capacity from nothing three years ago to 150 million gallons today.

“Almost every state is beginning to recognize now the huge promise and opportunity that bio-development affords,” Nilsestuen said. “What Wisconsin needs to do is figure out what are our comparative advantages, given our natural resources and industry and research base, and focus our efforts in that way.”

Their is no need for any alternative fuel because the price of it will be outrageious as soon as it is aviable just like everything in this rip off country. The price of regular gas and diesel fuel should be no more than $1.00 per gallon but the people who make the money off of the fuels are gready and just WANT more money thoes people need a job like i have and try to survive on $5.15 per hour and let them know what it is like to pay these pricer for fuel and just try to get by w/ what they make

bikeguy responded 3 years ago: #2

Finite sources of energy, yield a very unpromising, and polluted future. Alternative sources for energy bring change for the better. These options for fuel foster the growth of our local economy by supporting our state's farmers, and those businesses which produce offensive byproducts such as restaurant grease.

BiodieselEngineer responded 3 years ago: #3

I have worked a lot with biodiesel over the last 2 years including my Masters of Engineering Thesis and my current research. While I am happy to see that there is more money going into renewables I still have not seen a satisfactory answer to two critical aspects of biodiesel. First, is biodiesel sustainable? To produce biodiesel there are certain energy inputs required that come from non-renewable fuels, and I am curious if the builders of this plant have considered the life-cycle effects of biodiesel from the growing of the crops to the emissions out the tail pipe.

Second, I am curious as to the economic sustainability of biodiesel. Will the biodiesel cost around $2.00 per gallon without a subsidy? Subsidies take money from other jobs because they use tax dollars. This includes fire, police, librarians and teachers.

If the answer is no to any of these questions then we as engineers and scientists need to go back to the drawing board and try to solve this problem of sustainable economicly viable energy. Whatever the solution is (solar/wind, fusion, biofuel, etc), we need to find an answer sooner rather than later.

I am a Mechanical Engineering Student from Pakistan. And i am doing my Final Year Project On Extraction Testing and Feasibility Analysis Of Bio-Diesel. My problem is very slow response from my Govt. and Cartels of Shell and PSO who are not letting much to invest in this area and some corrupt Politician who for there own benefit are neglecting the benefits of local people.
I also want to discuss the feasibility of BioDiesel from Algae in Pakistan.

John Goodrich responded 3 years ago: #5

BioDiesel sounds like a great opportunity to me. There are no one stop fix all solutions for our energy needs.
We have grown to be the most robust economy in the world, leading in cutting edge technology all the way.
There are no problems here, there may be some obstacles to overcome, but we will do that. Just think every gallon of BioDiesel, Ethanol & Methanol we burn puts money in the bank for more research here in the US. For awhile I was able to keep tabs on all the new alternative fuel plants starting up, but it is happening very fast now.

David Arnold responded 3 years ago: #6

I am Vice President of MMS - A / e , Inc.. MMS is a well established , full service , engineering and architect firm . I am responsible for our alternative energy development division. We have been working with farms and rural communities in an effort to help small business and individuals develop their own alternative fuels and energy resources .

I will not rest until I see ethanol stills and biodiesel plants become as common as combines on our farms. I want to talk to people that want to create thei own fuel producing systems . Selling corn , beans , and other biofuel crops to the huge firms may be OK , but , it doesn,t do anything for our own energy independnce.

Anyone interested can call me or email me (darnold@mmsae.com).

By the grace of Almighty Allah i have completed my project on Bio-DIesel me and my team mates are the first to built the first operational biodiesel plant in PAkistan. In our project we have also tested feasibility of an Algae based water cleaning plant in Pakistan. to create clean water and produce a lot of Algae that can really dance to produce BioDiesel. InshAllah my next task would be producing an ideal mixer that would create the right amount of Mineral Diesel and BioDiesel for your car.

Hi,
I am an MBA student at LUMS in Lahore, Pakistan. I am doing a project on renewable energy sources in Pakistan in the wake of so much heated debate on environment internationally. I was amazed to read from Bilal's post that somebody has an operational biodiesel facility in Pakistan. If possible, I would like to talk to Bilal or anybody else working on renewable or efficient energy sources in Pakistan.

Thanks
AJ

P.S By the way Pakistan is not a big polluter internationally but we all should do our part.

All ppl plz feel free to contact me at ubk241@yahoo.com. well the major work we did was production of BioDiesel from to main sources Algae and Waste Cooking Oil. The other sources are Sukh Chain (Pongamia Pinata). We further tested this Biodiesel at a fuel testing facility all of the properties of this fuel fell closely in range with the Diesel fuel.
Well for those who are not aware of its properties the y are Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, produced from Mixing of Methanol and Oils (Containig Fatty Acids) at suitable conditons.
As far as our plant is conerned it is a 5L plant having three chambers namely Pretreatmnet or storage chamber The reaction chamber and the washing chamber an external chamber for preparation of solution of NaOH and CH3OH is also present.

I am interested in coordinating efforts, and perhaps very modest investments (<$1,500) with like-minded people, who want to manufacture biodiesel in Southern Wisconsin. I am aware of people who have been making $$$ in this area for over two years already in DoItYourself-styled cottage industries. The waste oil refining market has yet to be tapped, and opportunities, by and large, will dry up SOON with plans for large plants in Racine and DeForest. Having successfully worked with some small scale experiments, a moderate scale up seems feasible. I am interested in issues beyond my scope like blends, glycerine and byproducts disposal. I have had no problem finding restaurants that will give away waste oil for nothing or practically nothing. I am a mechanical engineer and chemist, with considerable industrial experience.

Waqas Khatri responded 2 years ago: #21

I am an industrial engineering student at Penn State and have been interested in renewable energy for a long time, specifically biodiesel. Before my company, Chemi Group of Industries, can start investing into plants, first thing to do is a board or a committee needs to be set up on a federal level that can overlook the industry. The only closest thing there is the Alternate Energy Development Board. I already have the support of the National Biodiesel Board here in the U.S. and also some of the most influential people that have initiated this Industry. I was wondering if Pakistan has any set definition of Biodiesel, meaning minimum standards for the quality of the product. Also I wanted to know if there are any existing incentives for producers and users of this locally produced fuel. If possible please reply me at wsk118@psu.edu as soon as possible as I dont want to waste any time and get with the programas fast as possible.

I am currently working on a project to study the Biodiesel production and marketing in Pakistan. If you are interested in collaboration or information sharing, please drop me a note at biodieselpk at yahoo dot com.

It would take an organized, collaborative, steady effort to make the Government of Pakistan understand the need to save foreign exchange on importing close to 5 million tons of diesel every year. This demand will grow about 5 to 10 percent every year if the pace of development continues at current rate.

Hope to hear from you.

Well, there emissions depend upon the mixture of biodiesel and diesel used. Using 100 percent biodiesel reduces CO2 by more than 80 percent and CO emissions by 90 percent; also, no SO2 emissions.

Hi Umar,

I am writing a paper on "prospects of ethanol production from sugarcane molasses in Pakistan" and will soon be published. My suggestion to you is to also look for jatropha as a source for biodiesel. It is a hardy plant and can be grown anywhere with least water and nutritional requirements. Indians have done a lot of work. Biodiesel from algea is also good one. By that we can combine watewater treatmnet ponds and harvested algea could be used for biodiesel. I am in Canada and could be a help in technical terms from crop jatropha production to estraction of biodiesel. Last but not the least "Your project is functional now are still in development phase."

Few days ago i read an article in a newspaper about going of food stocks in Biodiesel production in UK.
The British PM Gorden Brown said that due to shortage of food the amount of agriculture output that was required for biofuels was to be decreased from 2.5.
Now this is the time to act as we ppl know that Biodiesel is not only produced from agriculture products but also stuff that is not edible like Pongamia Pinata oil.
Algae oil, and waste cooking oil.
There is a dire need to put restriction on what type of raw material we should use for production of Biodiesel so that we can save the future of this precious fuel. as ppl who are against it are going to put more and more restriction on its production. they have power they have money but we have got knowledge and we have got faith.
So all ppl working on Biodiesel i request u all to clear the doubts in ppl abt biodiesel and do whatever it takes. there will ppl who will mock you laugh at you but dont hesitate and dont let your spirits fall as we know truth, and must stop this ongoing war against Biodiesel. and to save the future we must.

Hello All,

This is first time, I came on this page and happy to see so many people interested in bringing new technologies in Pakistan. Now, I think we need to st up a forum where we can all discuss and put our proposal forward to govt. Given notorious reputation of political system, we might have to do it privately! So, we need to discuss, what are the regulations in Pak, who are the stakeholders, policy makers, what is the potential, can we set-up an established foreign biodiesel company as a franchise in Pakistan. So there are many things that needs to discussed. I am more interested in using waste vegitable oil for biodiesel, thus solving two problems in one go.
Setting-up a dedicated website is good starting point.
