Online school to lose $1.2 million, instead of expected gain

Wisconsin's first statewide online high-school program may close unless administrators can fix the problems that led to a massive shortfall on initial expectations, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

IQ Academies was supposed to generate $1 million for the Waukesha school district where it is operated by the 2006-07 school year, but is now expected to have a net loss of $1.2 million by mid-2006.

Officials said fewer students signed up than were expected, but technology accounted for a large part of the cost overrun.
