Biomedical alliance marks first full year

Milwaukee — The Biomedical Technology Alliance, a group of investors, scientists and politicians in southeast Wisconsin, said in its 2005 annual report that it is creating a roadmap for a biotechnology campus and other infrastructure in the area.

Founded in 2004, the alliance received $500,000 from the state, which was matched by participating academic institutions. That was not quite the $2.5 million in state funding that was originally proposed, and which the alliance is still pursuing.

The southeast region's major biomedical strengths, according to research by the alliance, fall into four categories:

• Rehabilitation and biometrics
• Biomedical imaging
• Genetics, proteomics and biochemistry
• Bioinformatics and medical informatics

Going forward, the Biomedical Technology Alliance is looking to host further collaborative seminars, seek additional funding and work on both infrastructure development and branding of southeast Wisconsin as a biotech center.
