Penn State medical center installs MediaSite

Madison, Wis. - Educators at a Pennsylvania teaching and research hospital are integrating Sonic Foundry's MediaSite product into their instruction to distribute information about diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and other medical topics.

The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center recently purchased the Web-based communications tool to record and transmit presentations, lectures, public forums, and internal staff meetings to medical students and other audiences over the Internet. The system displays written presentation materials alongside audio and video content in unified web cast packages.

Russ Scaduto, director of education technology and associate professor of cellular and molecular physiology at PSHMC, said in a release that the technology should facilitate student learning and collaboration between faculty and medical specialists.

"Our continued objective is to increase the scientific and medical knowledge needed to eradicate disease and help those with other health issues live better lives, and a big part of reaching that objective is effective communication," Scaduto said.

The college Web site offers hundreds of presentations online and averages nearly 2,000 visitors per month. Recently, the school captured professors and lecturers in a forum on the topic of reducing cancer. Sonic Foundry has sold MediaSite to an assortment of businesses, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and government agencies.
