TomoTherapy to sell medical devices in India

Madison, Wis. - TomoTherapy executives have talked about their interest in expanding geographically, and now their plans are bearing fruit.

The Madison-based medical technology company has announced that it is partnering with Kirloskar Theratronics, Ltd. to distribute its TomoTherapy Hi-Art System throughout India and surrounding countries. KTPL, part of the Kirloskar Group, provides radiotherapy equipment and solutions to India, and serves about 250 current radiotherapy installations across the country.

The first installation of the Hi-Art System in India will be at Tata Memorial Centre, a comprehensive cancer care center established in 1941. The Hi-Art, which combines image guidance with the ability to target radiation to a tumor and avoid healthy tissue, will be installed at Tata Memorial Centre within the next six months.

Beyond Tata Memorial, the Indian radiotherapy market is potentially lucrative. Cancer is the second largest cause of death in India, and an estimated 700,000 to 900,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year. The World Health Organization estimates that India needs 1,000 radiotherapy units to fulfill the future treatment demand, but the nation currently has only about 400.
