GE Healthcare partners with UNC on breast cancer imaging research

Waukesha, Wis. - GE Healthcare has signed a multi-year agreement to establish a Center for Research Excellence in Breast Cancer Imaging within the University of North Carolina's Biomedical Research Imaging Center.

With funding from GE Healthcare, a $17 billion unit of General Electric Co., the center is designed to advance and commercialize research and technology to diagnose and treat breast cancer, and its researchers will conduct breast-imaging projects.

Among the research projects to be conducted at the center are an evaluation of the role of contrast-enhanced mammography in breast cancer diagnosis, and the development of improved digital mammography and mechanisms to reduce radiation dose to patients who undergo mammography.

Dr. Etta D. Pisano, a Kenan professor of radiology and biomedical engineering and former chief of breast imaging at UNC, was named director of the center.
