DeForest biodiesel plant begins production

DeForest, Wis. - Wisconsin's first large-scale biodiesel plant has officially opened with a capacity to produce 20 million gallons per year.

Sanimax Energy will operate the plant and produce 60,000 gallons of biodiesel per day from a variety of different raw materials, including beef tallow. The plant, which is served by road and rail transportation, employs 15 people.

Biodiesel, which can be combined with petroleum diesel to create diesel-biodiesel blends, is billed an alternative fuel that generates less pollution than conventional diesel fuel.

Sanimax is a founding member of the Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance, a nonprofit corporation to support the development of bio-based renewable energy.
