TomoTherapy opens technical training center

Madison, Wis. - TomoTherapy has announced the opening of a multi-disciplinary, international Technical Training Center at its Madison headquarters.

The company, which recently raised $213 million in an initial public offering of stock, said engineers, physicists, and radiation technicians are among the professionals who will receive on-site, interactive training in classroom settings that duplicate equipment and conditions at global Hi-Art system sites.

TomoTherapy manufactures and sells the Hi-Art treatment system, a radiation therapy system developed for the treatment of a variety of cancers. The company employs a “learn and do” training philosophy that prepares the engineers to maintain Hi-Art treatment systems in their home countries throughout Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America.

Abby Ngampongsai, manager of custom training for TomoTherapy, said the Madison center will be a place where technicians learn new skills or engineers break down a machine and practice troubleshooting. In addition, the center provides workers with an opportunity to create live simulations of treatment plans, system calibrations, and radiation delivery.

The opening of the center comes as TomoTherapy observes the beginning of a partnership with Antwerp University Radiotherapy Center, Belgium. This non-profit organization, jointly run by University Hospital Antwerp and the ZNA Middelheim Hospital, has installed two Hi-Art treatment systems and will serve as a regional satellite to the Madison Technical Training Center.
