Madison tech college to host Girl Tech 2007

Madison, Wis. - At least 45 girls in grades six through nine are expected to take part in Girl Tech 2007, which will be held June 26 to 28 at Madison Area Technical College.

The program, sponsored by area technology employers to encourage young women to consider future careers in science and technology, will feature hands-on technical activities that introduce girls to fields like biotechnology, civil engineering, electronics and electron microscopy, and information technology programming and infrastructure.

Those activities include exercises in which the girls will solve a crime CSI-style by isolating a “fruit smoothie DNA,” program a robot to take care of animals in a LEGO zoo, create their own animated movies, and use interactive computer technology to learn about networks and security.

Ten area middle school teachers also will attend the event to look for new ways to bring technology to their classrooms.
