UWM appoints Scanes as vice chancellor of research

Milwaukee, Wis. - It took nearly one year, but the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has found a successor to former research dean Abbas Ourmazd, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

UWM has appointed Colin Scanes as vice chancellor for research and economic development. Scanes had been the chief economic development strategist for Mississippi State University, but his role here will be to advance university research into the commercial realm.

Scanes, 60, is a native of Great Britain, and his career stops also include Leeds University in the United Kingdom and Iowa State University.

UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago has launched a Research Growth Initiative to better develop and commercialize the research developed by university scientists. The university is trying to raise private funds to build a new engineering campus and business incubator so that their discoveries can be transferred into knowledge-based commerce and jobs.
