Madison to host World Stem Cell Summit

Madison, Wis. - Gov. Jim Doyle has announced that Madison will host the World Stem Cell Summit this September, an event that is expected to draw premier researchers, industry leaders, and investors.

The summit, to be held Sept. 22 and 23 at the Alliant Energy Center, will take place on the 10th anniversary of the stem cell breakthroughs of Dr. Jamie Thomson, professor of anatomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1998, Thomson and his UW-Madison colleagues became the first to successfully isolate and cultivate an embryonic stem cell line.

It will be hosted by the WiCell Research Institute and UW-Madison's Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center. In 2005, the National Institutes of Health selected WiCell as the nation's first national stem cell bank.
