Madison, Wis. -
Gov. Jim Doyle has announced that the
World Stem Cell Summit will begin with Lab on the Lake, a free one-day public forum and festival September 21.
Madison will host the annual summit Sept. 21-23, with most events taking place at the Alliant Energy Center. The event, which is expected to draw researchers and investors worldwide, will be held on the 10th anniversary of the stem cell research breakthrough announced by
Dr. Jamie Thomson and other
University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers that successfully isolated and cultured an embryonic stem cell line.
The daylong Lab on the Lake event will feature real lab experiences with the methods scientists use to grow and study stem cells. It also will include an expert panel of UW-Madison stem cell scientists like Thomson,
Timothy Kamp, Clive Svendsen, and Linda Hogle, stem cell talks by scientists
Gabriela Cezar and Rupa Shevde, and music on the UW-Madison's Memorial Union Terrace.
The World Stem Cell Summit will be organized by the
Genetics Policy Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Center, and the
WiCell Research Institute.
