OpGen moves headquarters, expansion plans to Maryland

Madison, Wis. — OpGen, a gene sequencing company with 30 employees in Madison, is opening a new headquarters in Montgomery County in Maryland and plans to expand to 70 employees there in a year.

CEO Noel Doheny, who lives in Maryland and joined OpGen this January, said the move is because “Madison is not the epicenter of sequencing activity,” according to the Washington Business Journal. He said further expansion would be at the Maryland headquarters, which will start with 10 new hires. Before joining OpGen, he was senior vice president of molecular diagnostics for Affymetrix

Montgomery County is home to 250 of Maryland's 370 bioscience companies, and 40,000 of Maryland's 60,000 bioscience employees, according to recent published reports.

OpGen received $23.6 in venture capital last September, and an undisclosed further amount this month from investor Evan Jones, former CEO of Digene Corp.
