UWM seeks more state funding to drive research

Milwaukee, Wis. - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Carlos Santiago will ask the state of Wisconsin for $10 million in each of the next two budget cycles to further drive its research and economic development mission, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The university, which is trying to transfer more of its research into the private sector, already has received $10 million in the 2007-09 state budget to build on strengths like biomedical technology, advanced manufacturing, and engineering.

The most recent request is part of a University of Wisconsin System budget plan that Kevin Reilly, system president, will submit to the Board of Regents, the report said.

UWM has launched a Research Growth Initiative that could give the university a greater role in regional economic development. Earlier this year, it awarded $500,000 in catalyst grants to seven research projects on campus, and it has raised $125 million in a capital campaign for campus expansion, improvements to research infrastructure, faculty support, and scholarships.
